Bridge Street

This photograph was taken in 1937. The main people here, and you can only really see two - one was named Jumbo Bates and the other one is Fred Errin. Really, you can’t really see anything other than, er, the old Dover – the old George Spurgeon School behind… This is the top end of Bridge Street, which was a cul-de-sac, with a double gate opening onto George Spurgeon playground. I rather think it’s the coronation… King George VI. I did live in one of those houses that you can see, but at a later date in the war. Full of children, the houses were, too – although there were a lot of old people lived up there, as well. Mainly grandparents, sons and daughters and their grandchildren, that was the way of things in those days. They lived close together, the families.
